Overview
A Bolt is a type of Connector that joins two objects on adjacent layers, rotating them on a pivot point. There are four main predefined types of Bolts that rotate objects in different ways.
Usage and behaviour
Placing and Detaching Bolts
Bolts can be placed onto any solid object, similar to Gadgets. Unlike Gadgets, Bolts will automatically snap to the front face objects, and cannot be rotated while held with the Popit Cursor.
When placing a Bolt, it will automatically snap to the estimated center of the target object. Note that this center is not the center of mass, but the average center between all the vertices of the object. If an object is within a layer behind the target object, both objects will automatically be bolted together once placed, making a bolt-group at a pivot point at the Bolt's position. Selecting either part of a bolt-group and pressing will break the group.
When a Bolt is not part of a group, a new group can be made by positioning the target object within a layer of an object behind it and pressing . This will Bolt the two objects together and a power drill sound effect will play to confirm the connection, with the target object being deselected.
By pressing instead of , the target object can be duplicated instead of deselected.
Re-attaching Bolts with these methods does not work on LittleBigPlanet PSP.
Behavior
Bolted objects will rotate in different directions from one another; e.g. if a Motor Bolt is set to rotate Clockwise, the front object will rotate Clockwise while the back object will rotate Anti-Clockwise, and vice-versa.
Some of the models for Bolts are split into two components that rotate with each object the Bolt is connected to. For the Motor Bolt, the interior copper wiring will rotate with the object in front, while the brass outer casing will rotate with the object behind it.
While the predefined Bolt types have their own set of tweaks, all Bolts share a Strength tweak, known as Tightness in the original LittleBigPlanet. This tweak affects how susceptible the bolt-group is to external forces. How this is used in practice varies slightly depending on the bolt type, and will be detailed in their respective sections. The other tweaks shared between bolts are as follows:
Visible in Play Mode: ( ) Determines whether or not the object will be rendered in Play Mode. |
Mute (LBP3 Only): ( ) Sets whether or not to play the bolt's associated rotation sound effects. |

The Bolt is the simplest of the bolt connectors, acting as little more than a pivot; an object connected by a bolt can rotate freely, but will not move laterally.
Tweak
Strength: (0% - 100%) Affects how tight the bolt is screwed in. At 0%, the bolt is very loose and objects will spin freely; at 100%, the bolt is incredibly tight and objects do not rotate. |
Spring Bolt

The Spring Bolt, known as the Sprung Bolt in the original LittleBigPlanet, will try to rotate a bolted object to a specific angle with springy connection, hence the name.
Tweaks
Angle
Angle: (0 - 360) Sets the angle that the bolted object will attempt to maintain, indicated by a green arrow in LBP2 and an orange line in LBP1. |
Strength
Strength: (0% - 100%) Affects how much effort the bolt exerts to maintain its original orientation. |
Motor Bolt

Game: | LittleBigPlanet, LittleBigPlanet PSP, LittleBigPlanet 2, LittleBigPlanet PS Vita, LittleBigPlanet 3, |
Type: | Gadgets |
Category: | Connectors |
Inputs: | 1 |
Outputs: | 0 (LBP1) 1 (LBP3) |
The Motor Bolt continuously rotates a bolted object in one direction.
The two objects will rotate in different directions depending on their layer positioning and the bolt's settings; if a Motor Bolt is set to rotate Clockwise, the object in front will rotate in the expected direction, but the object behind will actually rotate Anti-Clockwise, and vice-versa.
Tweaks
Speed
Speed: (0 - 60 (LBP1); 0 - 1,500 (LBP2+)) Sets how fast the Motor Bolt rotates, visualized by a rotating hexagon in front of the bolt. |
Direction: (
) Determines which direction the Motor Bolt rotates in. |
Strength
Strength: (0% - 100%) Affects how strong the Motor Bolt's rotation is. At 0%, the bolt has no effect and the objects will spin freely; at 100%, the objects will rotate in accordance with the Motor Bolt's tweak settings. |
Activation
The way the Motor Bolt is activated changes between games.
LBP1
In the original LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet PSP, the Motor Bolt's Behavior is based on the Behavior setting of the incoming switch.
LBP2
In LittleBigPlanet 2, the Motor Bolt's Behavior is based on the Input Action setting in its tweak menu.
Wobble Bolt

The Wobble Bolt rotates the bolted object back and forth between two points.
Tweaks
Basic Settings
Rotation: (0 - 2160) Sets the Angle Range for the Wobble Bolt, visualized with a green outline of the angle around the bolt. |
Angle: (0 - 360) Sets the Rotation Angle for the Wobble Bolt, visualized by the green line at the base of the bolt. |
Strength: (0% - 100%) Affects how strong the Wobble Bolt's rotation is. At 0%, the Bolt has no effect on the motion, but objects will be locked to rotation within the Bolt's Angle Range; at 100%, the objects will rotate in accordance with the Wobble Bolt's tweak settings. |
Timing
Time: (0.0s - 86,400.0s) Determines the amount of time it takes for the Wobble Bolt to rotate from one side to the other and back. |
Pause: (0.0s - 86,400.0s) Determines the amount of time the Wobble Bolt will pause at either end of its rotation. |
Sync: (0.0s - 86,400.0s) Determines the time offset of the Wobble Bolt to other Connectors in the level. |
Flipper Motion
Time: (
) If enabled, the Wobble Bolt will rotate in the given direction from one side to the other. When it reaches the end of the cycle, it will quickly flip back to the start of the cycle. |
Backwards
Backwards: ( ) If enabled, flips the direction that the Wobble Bolt rotates first. |
Activation
The way the Wobble Bolt is activated changes between games.
LBP1
In the original LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet PSP, the Wobble Bolt's Behavior is based on the Behavior setting of the incoming switch.
LBP2
In LittleBigPlanet 2, the Wobble Bolt's Behavior is based on the Input Action setting in its tweak menu.
