The State Sensor is a sensor gadget introduced in LittleBigPlanet 3. A variant of the Player Sensor, it outputs a signal when a character performs a specific action within its detection range.
Usage and Behaviour
The State Sensor can be placed onto any surface, including Microchip circuit boards. It has one output, from which it sends a digital ON signal when it detects a character performing the action specified in its tweak menu.
List of Detectable States
The State Sensor can detect one of 27 different actions, some of which are dependent on specific character, powerups, and even downloadable content. Below is a list of every state that the State Sensor can detect, grouped by category.
Universal
- Standing: Detects when a character is on the ground and not moving. Note that standing on a moving platform counts against this, even if the player isn't actively pushing .
- Sneaking: Detects when a character is moving at less than 10% of Sackboy's running speed.
- Walking: Detects when a character is moving at a rate between 10% and 37% of Sackboy's running speed.
- Running: Detects when a character is moving at any rate faster than 38% of Sackboy's running speed.
- Jumping: Detects when a character jumps and leaves the ground. In reality, this tracks any form of mid-air ascension, regardless of whether or not the player actually pressed to jump.
- Falling: Detects when a character descends in mid-air.
- Swimming: Detects when a character is swimming in water. Floaty Fluid has its own swimming state, and thus is not detected by this.
- Ducking: Detects when a character's head collides with a solid object. The angle this happens at is irrelevant; an upside-down Sackbot colliding with the floor can set this off.
- Push: Detects when a character is grabbing an object and pushing it forward.
- Touching ground: Detects when a character is in contact with a "walkable" floor. Any slope at an angle greater than 45° is not considered "walkable", thus will not set this off, regardless of character choice or whether the object is attractive.
Character Specific
- Climbing: Detects when Sackboy is climbing on a climbable material.
- Walking Under Water: Detects when Big Toggle is inside water or Floaty Fluid.
- Walking On Water: Detects when Little Toggle is on the surface of water.
- Wall sliding: Detects when a character attaches to a wall they can Wall Jump off of. Sackboy and OddSock can trigger this.
- Wall Jumping: Detects when a character jumps off of a wall jump surface. This state lasts until the character collides with something that changes their state.
- Transforming: Sends a pulse signal when Toggle (or a custom Changeling chracter) changes forms.
- Flapping: Detects when Swoop flaps thier wings to ascend.
- Swooping: Detects when Swoop glides. Despite its mechanical similarities, Sackboy gliding with the Hero Cape is not detected by this.
- Has power up: Detects when a character is equipped with any powerup. Sackboy and OddSock can set this off.
- Hook Hat: Attached to Rail: Detects when Sackboy has the Hook Hat and is attached to a Bendy Rail.
Requires DLC
- Springinator: Ready to Spring: Detects when OddSock has the Springinator and is holding in mid-air to spring bounce.
- Springinator: Spring Bouncing: Detects when OddSock is in mid-air after bouncing with the Springinator. This state lasts until the player hits the ground, or collides with something that changes their state.
- Hoverboard: Gliding: Detects when Sackboy is hovering above the ground with the Hoverboard.
- Hoverboard: Grinding: Detects when Sackboy is attached to a Bendy Rail while riding the Hoverboard.
- Swimming Inside Fluid: Detects when a character is inside Floaty Fluid. Any character can trigger this, including Big Toggle.
- Walking Under Fluid: Detects when Big Toggle specifically is inside Floaty Fluid.
Tweaks
Choose State: (see above) Determines which state a character must be in to trigger the State Sensor. |
Sense Owner Only: ( ) If enabled, the State Sensor will only check the state of the Sackthing it is attached to. Only applicable if the sensor is on a circuit board belonging to a Sackbot, or a Broadcast Microchip. |
Detect State of: (
) Determines how the State Sensor detects characters. |
Character
Allows a specific character to be detected, be it one of the four default characters, or a custom character saved with the Capture Character tool. If a character isn't specified, anyone can activate it.
Character to Detect: (Character; My Characters) Choose a specific character for the sensor to detect. If no character is specified, anyone can activate it. |
Creature Types: (
) Determines which players the State Sensor will look for, and whether or not Sackbots can trigger it. |
Detect Form: (
) If the chosen character is a changeling, e.g. Toggle, this determines which form the sensor will detect. |
Range
These tweaks apply if the sensor is set to detect Creatures in Range.
Minimum Detection Range: (0.0 - 5,000.0) Determines how close characters can get before the sensor stops detecting them. |
Maximum Detection Range: (0.0 - 5,000.0) Determines how close characters need to be in order to activate the sensor. Setting this below 0.0 will set the radius to infinite. |
Trigger Angle Range: (0 - 360) Sets the angle radius of the sensor, with 360 being a full circle. Rotating the gadget changes the orientation of the detection range. |
Layer Detection Range: (0 - 16) Sets how many layers away from the object the sensor can detect players, with 0 being equivalent to Same Layer and 16 detecting characters from any layer. |
Trigger
The following tweaks only apply if the sensor is set to detect Creatures in Contact.
Include Rigid Connections: ( ) If enabled, the State Sensor will also check for characters colliding with any objects that are glued to its host. |
Require Tag: ( ) If enabled, characters must also have a matching Tag attached in order to activate the sensor. Only applicable if the sensor is set to detect Players & Sackbots. |
Tag Type
These tweaks only displayed if the "Require Tag" tweak is turned on, which itself requires "Creature Types" being set to Players & Sackbots.
Tag Colour: (
) Sets the colour channel for the gadget. Sensors will only detect Tags matching this colour. |
Select or Tweak a Tag Label Opens a dialogue box to create a new Tag label, or select an existing one. |
Output
Invert Output: ( ) Inverts the gadget's output, turning On signals Off and vice-versa. |
Electronics and Cable Visibility: (
) Determines whether or not the gadget (and any outgoing wires) will be rendered in Play Mode. |
