Level description

First Steps is the first proper level of the original LittleBigPlanet's story mode, and the second level of the Gardens. As with the Introduction, it is designed to get the player accustomed to the game's basic mechanics, teaching them to jump over obstacles, how to navigate through layers, and what to do if they get stuck.

Overview

Plot overview

Sackboy arrives at the Gardens and meets its rulers, the King and Queen. Together, they and the rest of the Gardens' inhabitants prepare Sackboy for his adventure across Craftworld.

Walkthrough guide

The level opens in a large, flat area that provides ample room to run around and review the basic movement mechanics. Past the close-level post is a checkpoint and a small set of obstacles. Two platforms must be overcome to reach the top of a brick wall, the first of which is a piece of rocking grass that wobbles when platformed on. Jumping between it and the three mushrooms ahead leads to both the top of the wall and Dumpty's platform. Dumpty is both grabbable and affected by physics and can be pushed off his wall to break open his shell; inside are a large amount of score bubbles that can be collected to earn points. Atop the wall is a sticker switch that, on repeat playthroughs can be activated using the Rainbow Shoe sticker to lower a start gate at the right side of the wall. If the race is activated, a two-minute-long race will begin after the countdown.

The King is the first creator curator in LittleBigPlanet and assists in teaching various game mechanics.

Continuing to the right leads to a set of obstacles similar to before, but now with a longer jump after the mushroom platform. Timing your jump is crucial to clearing the gap and reaching the top of the wall. Once the wall is cleared, Dumpty reappears to teach the player about score bubbles. A set of five score bubbles sits below Dumpty's platform, and running through them in quick succession begins a score multiplier that will multiply all points earned in the sequence. Once again, Dumpty can be pushed off his platform to reveal additional score bubbles hidden inside his body. The following section teaches about LittleBigPlanet's three-layer platforming and how to swap layers. In the case of the first half of this obstacle, jumping moves the player into the back layers so long as they can reach the platform above when jumping. The second half involves jumping down to front layers, which can be performed by holding down on the left stick and jumping. Doing this all in quick succession while collecting the score bubbles placed along the hills leads to score multipliers.

Past another checkpoint are three small studs of sponge to practice jumps, with stack of score bubbles in between. Up another set of hills is the first hazard in the form of horrible gas disguised as water. Falling into the gas instantly dissolves the player, losing them a life and respawning them at the most recent checkpoint. A giant rotating waterwheel assists in avoiding this, but players who wish to earn additional points can ride the water wheel to collect the score bubbles placed between its blades. Completing this obstacle leads to a wardrobe collection booth filled with the first prize bubbles containing costume pieces for the SackBeth and Lady SackBeth outfits. These costume pieces will be added to their respective categories in the Customize Character tab of your Popit, while also earning towards the Collected All Gifts rewards upon the level's completion. Dumpty appears again, and in a similar fashion to before, can be pulled and broken. This time, an out-of-reach platform holds a stack of six score bubbles. Dumpty can be used as an improvised platform to reach these otherwise unobtainable bubbles.

Down past another set of score bubbles is a breakable bridge leading down to a pit inescapable by normal means. Inside the pit is a Tutorial TV that explains how to use the Hold to Retry feature. By opening your Popit and holding the action button down while selecting Hold to Retry, Sackboy will pop and respawn at the closest checkpoint. This tutorial can be avoided if the aforementioned race was activated at the beginning of the level, in which case a bird will descend to act as a grabbable object to clear the gap. Additionally, if the race is active, the end gate follows in the area just after.

The next tutorial formally introduces the sticker switch mechanic, where three prize bubbles are provided to the player. A cardboard cutout of Henry must have stickers applied to the correct body parts in order to complete the tutorial. The Round Blue Body sticker must be placed on his torso, and two Rainbow Shoe stickers placed on his shoes, all of which are accessible in the Popit's Stickers and Decorations section. Selecting a sticker attaches it your Popit cursor, where you can move it around using the left stick and resize it using the right stick. Hovering the cursor over a valid target and pressing the action button places the sticker. If completed correctly, Henry will lower the bridge ahead, letting the player pass. Waiting for Henry to cross the bridge causes two beavers to rise and throw score bubbles. Past this tutorial is an optional one on LittleBigPlanet's PlayStation Eye® integration. If you have a functioning PlayStation Eye®, eight prize bubbles containing PlayStation Eye® camera templates can be collected and used according to the tutorial, working in a similar manner to stickers.

Past this final tutorial is the scoreboard. The scoreboard summarizes the number of points earned in the level, the percentage of prizes earned, and whether any lives were lost; completing the latter two rewards you with exclusive prizes. Additionally, prior to server shutdowns, your score would be placed on an online hi-score leaderboard.
