Lowrider is the first main level of the Metropolis. It introduces the possibilities for vehicle creation and customization in LittleBigPlanet.
Overview
Plot overview
After a pit stop, Sackboy and Uncle Jalapeño resume their road trip out of the Canyons to the Metropolis. Arriving at Mags the Mechanic's car garage, Mags is left appalled at the state of Jalapeño's ride, and suggests Sackboy meet her across the city at her scrapyard garage for a new one. Sackboy ventures across the city to the scrapyard, where Mags provides him with a fresh new car to accessorize. Mags bets on Sackboy to challenge Ze Dude to a street race to win back her car. Ze Dude accepts but wipes out during the race, taking a plunge into the city's sewer system. Mags, distraught, insists she and Sackboy travel down into the subway to retrieve her ride.
Walkthrough guide
Past the entrance and the close-level post is Uncle Jalapeño's car and a prize bubble. The car can be driven by pulling the 3-way switch inside of the car; pull the lever left to drive forwards, and right to drive backwards. On repeat playthroughs of the level, a sticker switch just before the road can be activated using the Route 77 sticker to drop two prize bubbles on strings. Jumping off of Jalapeño's car gives you enough height to collect the prize bubbles. The next section involves driving up ramps. Driving through the first ramp leads to a small wall, where pulling the car's lever to the right reverses up the first ramp to yet another wall, where pulling the lever left leads out of the section.
Once in Mags' garage, a prize bubble hangs at the front from where you drove in. Now in the city, a wardrobe collection booth contains the Marvin, Mary Lou, and TwoSack outfits in prize bubbles. The area to the right has three lowrider cars with buttons on the hoods of their cars; pressing them causes them to bounce, propelling you upward. The first puzzle involves swinging off of lights to collect three prize bubbles, while also gaining enough height to reach the second lowrider. While the second lowrider involves the same concept, bouncing to the right reveals a secret lever that opens a door below it. Inside this room are two lowriders and a sticker switch activated using the Pink Blaster sticker. Activating the switch drops five prize bubbles and causes the lowriders to start bouncing, giving you a way to reach the prizes. Proceeding to the third lowrider like normal, five prize bubbles are in the immediate area, with two inside an apartment and three between hanging lights. While initially making your way from Mags' garage, you may have noticed prizes previously out of reach. Walking out of the lowest apartment to the left of the second lowrider leads to hanging stop lights and three prize bubbles around the wardrobe collection booth. Three prize bubbles sit on top of Mags' garage that are now obtainable by dropping onto the roof.
Returning to the third lowrider and the area after it, a piston lowrider serves as both a drivable vehicle and a means of reaching secrets. The first area where the lowrider can be found contains a prize bubble and a key, as well as a chute where pushing a box forces out two prize bubbles. Two more prize bubbles can be found between spinning electrified hazard signs. The area just before the scrapyard involves using the lowrider in two situations. The first half of the puzzle involves bouncing off the lowrider to reach a higher platform where a ramp and prize bubble can be dropped. The second half involves driving the lowrider up and bouncing up to pull down a lever and collect two prize bubbles. Driving the lowrider inside the scrapyard, its hood can be bounced off one last time to reach a prize bubble above.
Many of the hazards inside the scrapyard are electrified and can kill players on contact. An opportunity to collect six prize bubbles sits between two constantly moving wheels, the lower of which has electrified studs that players must occasionally jump over while collecting the prizes above. Hopping between scrapped cars, two prize bubbles can be found just before a crushing hazard involving a scrapped car. This scrapped car can later be used as an elevator to reach seven prize bubbles and a lever activating the way down to a x2 multi-player puzzle.
For the multi-player puzzle to be completed, one player must drive the lowrider on top while another player grabs onto the sponge connected to the car's chassis. Timing is essential, as moving electric hazards can kill players below. Once the first half is done, the player on the bottom can activate a lever, triggering the gate in front of the lowrider to open. The same fundamental rules apply on the second half, only now the player driving the lowrider must activate a lever to lower a gate for the player below. In total, five prizes can be obtained in this puzzle, while also unlocking the entire 50cc outfit.
Inside of Mags' garage, pulling a lever lowers a custom sports car and a prize bubble. Using any accessory on the custom sports car's sticker switch drops four prize bubbles with car-themed accessories to further accessorize the ride. The race against Ze Dude is simple, working fundamentally the same way as the rest of the driving sections; hold left on the lever to drive, letting the street race play itself out. Just before the scoreboard, a final prize bubble can be obtained.
