— Level description
|
Skate to Victory is the fourth main level of the original LittleBigPlanet's story mode, and the third and final level in the Gardens. The level serves as the first major trial of LittleBigPlanet, as the player climbs a large castle filled with lethal ghosts.
Overview
Plot overview
The King tests Sackboy's bravery by sending him into a haunted, ghost-inhabited castle. Dumpty watches over Sackboy as he ascends the castle's halls, joining him at the top before the two take a skateboard ride to the bottom. With Sackboy having proved himself capable to explore LittleBigPlanet on his own, the King sends Sackboy to the Savannah by submarine to meet Zola — the Savannah's king and creator curator.
Walkthrough guide
Skate to Victory starts similar to the rest of the Gardens' levels, with a runup before the first obstacles. However, heading left from the entrance reveals three teacups and a Sticker Switch activated with the Yellow Star sticker. Activating the switch drops three Prize Bubbles into each cup. Grabbing the Birdy on a String to ascend upward brings the first challenges of the level, with a notable increase in hazards compared to the previous two. Large spinning windmills hold grabbable sponge balls on the end of each sail, and gaps filled with Horrible Gas can be cleared by timing when you release the grab button. At the end of the first sequence of windmills, a hill just out of reach contains three Prize Bubbles, and the hill can be broken by performing a similar timed grab and release to fling yourself onto the platform.
Falling down below brings you into the lower portion of the level, where another Sticker Switch sits, once again activated by the Yellow Star sticker. Applying the sticker lowers four Prize Bubbles on strings. A waterwheel covered in Prize Bubbles serves as another hazard, but patient players can ride the wheel to collect all the bubbles during the wheel's rotation. Grabbing another Birdie on a String brings the player up to a Tutorial TV but backtracking to another Birdie reveals more hidden prizes. The Tutorial TV contains the Take A Photo and Delete All Community Photos tools and teaches the basics on how to use them.
Approaching a giant castle, the player is introduced to the first character enhancement found in LittleBigPlanet, the jetpack. Before progressing forward, the jetpack allows the player to fly freely (albeit within the limits of the jetpack's tether) around the nearby treetops, where additional Prize Bubbles and the third Yellow Star activated Sticker Switch can be found. Activating this switch lowers five Prize Bubbles on strings. Opening the castle's gate requires heavy sponge balls to be lowered into a weight-activated basket up above. Although five balls are readily available in the pit below, only three at most need to be placed to provide enough weight for the basket to begin lowering.
Now inside in the castle's walls, the number of dangerous obstacles marginally increases. Avoiding a giant crushing boot reveals the first ghosts, who slowly rise and lower out of sync. Getting caught in the Horrible Gas behind the ghosts will result in instant death, and a block of sponge must be dragged past three of them to reach an elevated point where a button activates the gate forward. The second room contains a similar challenge, with one ghost rising between three platforms and a button, this time activating a boot elevator. Taking the second boot elevator brings the player past a Sticker Switch activated with the Red Lion Emblem sticker, as well as the first key; activating the switch lowers two Prize Bubbles.
The proceeding room splits off into two sections: a x2 multiplayer puzzle and elevating platforms. The multiplayer puzzle involves two players standing on buttons at the same time to trigger a trap door, being mindful of the ghosts above. Taking the lift up leads to a similar physics challenge as the windmills at the start, where a boot occasionally kicks a piece of sponge-tipped cardboard away, giving players the opportunity to grab and release to go flying to the castle's peak. Once on top, all that remains is a skateboard ride just past a Start Gate with a key obtainable toward the end. Although the skateboard can be disembarked, and the bounty of Prize Bubble rewards collected just before the scoreboard, an opening in the large ramp provides one last hidden prize for a long trek backwards.

All work and no play makes Sackboy all sad inside, and that’s why after a hard day learning everything you can about jumping and grabbing, it’s time to play! Watch out though, as night time falls over the gardens, it can get a bit spooky!

Trivia
- This level's layout is a direct evolution of the layout featured in LittleBigPlanet's demonstration at GDC and E3 2007, featuring a fundamentally similar progression with opening the castle gate, ascending it, and skateboarding down.[2]
- The backing track Get It Together is also present in both this level and in the demo.
- The level description that states the level introduces races is incorrect, as race gates appear in the previous two levels, First Steps (accessed via Sticker Switch upon replaying the level) and Get a Grip.
