The Boost Boots are a powerup introduced in LittleBigPlanet 3 that allow Sackboy to perform a mid-air dash.

Overview

When equipped with the Boost Boots, pressing R1 cancels all of the player's current speed and causes them to dash in whichever direction Left Stick is held in, boosting straight up if the stick is neutral. From a standstill, a dash covers roughly four Big Grid squares, assuming the player dashes straight up, left, or right.

At the end of the dash, the player's speed gets dampened slightly, which is particularly noticeable when dashing straight left or right. This dampening effect can be cancelled by de-equipping the powerup just before it kicks in; depending on the player's timing, they will carry significantly more momentum out of a dash than intended.

Boost Recharge

The player can only dash once in mid-air, after which the Boost Boots must be recharged. They are normally recharged by landing on a non-lethal floor or Slide, or attaching to a Wall Jump Surface. If the appropriate tweak is enabled, colliding with an object that has a matching Tag will instantly recharge the boots. The Boost Boots are recharged when the user's hitbox intersects with a tagged object, regardless of whether the object itself is solid, and whether the Tag is currently active.

In the initial release of the game, the mid-air dash could be used as soon as the Boost Boots were equipped, regardless of whether the player was grounded. This could be exploited in levels where the Boost Boots are added to the player's Sackpocket by constantly equipping and de-equipping the powerup, allowing them to boost upward indefinitely. This exploit was patched in Game Update 1.06, requiring the player to touch the ground before they can initiate their first boost.

Sackpocket Item

The Boost Boots are one of five default powerups that are selectable on the Sackpocket Items page of Global Stuff. This version, which is also used in Adventure Mode, is set to recharge when the player collides with a blue tag labelled "Boost Refresher".

History

Before the Boost Boots were created, early versions of LittleBigPlanet 3 contained a custom "Trumpet Blast" powerup, which was a hand-held blaster rather than a pair of boots. Apart from the visuals, the main difference between the Trumpet Blast and Boost Boots are that the player would boost in the opposite direction that Right Stick is held, e.g. if the player aims at the ground, they boost upward when pressing R1, aiming right causes them to boost left, and so on.

The first build to contain a dedicated Boost Boots powerup would be the 2014-06-23 Pre-Beta. It is very unfinished in this version, lacking character animations and sound effects. An unfinished costume model is present but is disabled by default due to incompatibilities with Sackboy's skeleton. The powerup is unnamed in the Popit, however, its Plan file is named kit_monstersinc_rocket_boots_collectable.plan, and the Debug Menu refers to it as the "Dash Boots".

The Trumpet Boost wouldn't be fully replaced until the Private Beta, where the Boost Boots are in a much more complete form.
