This page is a tad short. A stub, if you will.

The Slide is a Gameplay Object in LittleBigPlanet 3 that is used for layer-to-layer travel.

Usage and Behaviour

Slides can be placed to bridge the gap between layers. They are intended to be placed in a way that ensures a player slides from a high platform in the background to a lower platform in the foreground.

When a Sackthing lands on a slide, they will enter a sliding state and begin moving down it until the bottom is reached, where they will automatically exit the sliding state.

Only Sackthings (players and Sackbots) can interact with slides. The only other entity that can interact with them is the unused Socket; however, placing one on a slide crashes the game.

In terms of physical attributes, slides are non-solid objects that float in mid-air and cannot be damaged by explosives. They are treated similarly to Procedural Materials, and can be edited with many of the same tools, including the Corner Editor, Sticker Cutter, and UV Tool. The player can make a slide look like most (but not all) of the materials in their Goodies Bag — either through its tweak menu or via the Material Changer — though it will only inherit the material's visual appearance, not its physical properties.

Tweaks

Physical Properties: (
Static •‎
Dynamic
)

When Static, the object cannot be moved while time is unpaused. When Dynamic, the object can be moved and is subject to gravity.
Choose Material: (Materials)
Choose a material to use for the Slide's texture. If the chosen material has colour, brightness, or animation speed tweaks, those will be added to the bottom of the Slide's tweak menu.
Note: The Camera Excluder, as well as any material that has no visuals aside from particle effects (Wind, Dust, Steam, etc) cannot be selected.

Movement

Deceleration on Impact: (0% - 100%)
Determines how much vertical speed a Sackthing loses when they hit the slide.
Slide Speed: (0% - 100%)
Affects how fast the player travels down the slide.
Steering: (0% - 100%)
Sets how much Left Stick input moves a Sackthing left or right while sliding; at 0%, the player has no control.

Special Properties

Base: (
No •‎
Yes
)

If set to Yes, the sides and bottom of the slide will be filled in, making it appear like a solid object. If set to No, only the front of the slide will be drawn.

Visuals

Visible in Play Mode: (
No •‎
Yes
)

Determines whether or not the object will be rendered in Play Mode.

History

Slides as a level feature have existed in some form since the earliest versions of the game, but in early builds, these were made by hand using decorations and Broadcast Microchips, with logic set to move the player into the foreground based on their proximity to a set of Tags below the slide.

The first publicly archived build to include a dedicated Slide tool was revision 534715, where it has very basic functionality. Characters that intersect with a Slide's hitbox play their generic death animation and enter a state where they do not respond to input. Additionally, as they have no tweak menu, the Material Changer is required to change its appearance.

By March 2014, basic sliding functionality had been implemented; all Sackthings can interact with slides, though Sackboy and Swoop are the only characters with defined "sliding" animations (OddSock and both Toggles use static placeholder animations).

Prior to Revision 644592, players could control their sliding speed with Left Stick, speeding up or slowing down depending on whether the stick was held Up or Down. Just like the ability to steer left and right, the amount of control the player had over their speed was determined by the slide's Steering tweak. This ability was removed from the final game.
