— Level description | ||
The Wheel Deal is a side level in Book One: Manglewood, and the first of two Contraption Challenges in LittleBigPlanet 3.
Overview
The player starts off in a workshop, with a link back to Manglewood Swamp directly behind them. Walking to the right presents them with a large blueprint and a Popit Powerup with which they can build a car for the upcoming race. First, the player must place a chassis onto the blueprint, then they can place wheels and gadgets onto the available attachment points. The player can start over at any time by pulling down the sponge with a trash can symbol, or by grabbing the car with the Popit Cursor and pressing to delete it.
Once the player is satisfied with their creation, heading through the Worm Hole takes them and their car to the startline to begin the race.
Depending on the outcome of the race, the player is either returned to the workshop to try again, or brought to the podium room to be showered with prizes and accolades, before ending the level at the scoreboard.
Building a car
Despite being found in Prize Bubbles and appearing in the level's Collectables page, the vehicle parts cannot be used in create mode; they can only be selected from the Goodies Bag while using a Popit Powerup that has them enabled.
Chassis
A chassis is the base onto which the player can place wheels and gadgets. There are six chassis available, each has a different number of attachment points, which are mapped to different buttons on the controller. Gadgets attached to an attachment point will be activated for as long as the corresponding button is held.
If the car gets stuck or the player wishes to return to the workshop, holding for one second will destroy the car and and send the driver back to the workshop.
Wheels
Wheels are the primary mode of propulsion for a vehicle. They can be placed onto one of the chassis' attachment points, and will start spinning when the corresponding controller button is held. There are four wheel types with different shapes and properties.
Gadgets
Gadgets are objects that can be attached to an attachment point in the same manner as wheels, and perform a unique ability when activated. There are four gadgets available, each has a different effect on the car.
| Turbo-Charger | When activated, all attached wheels will activate simultaneously, spinning faster than usual. | |
| Thruster | Propells the car in the direction of the thruster while active. | |
| Flipper | Rotates the vehicle while active. | |
| Balloon | Lifts the car up into the air from the point at which it was attached. |
Cooldown
Each gadget is subject to a cooldown, visualized by a timer that appears on the front when activated. Once the timer runs out, the gadget cannot be activated again until the timer fills up again.
Internally, the cooldown is handled by a speed scale timer whose input is connected to a Direction Combiner. A battery sends a positive signal of 35% to the timer, passively incrementing it over time, while a Tag Sensor detecting controller input from the attachment point sends a negative signal of 100% to the timer, decrementing it at a much faster rate while active. Once the timer hits 0.0s, the attachment point is prevented from decrementing the timer until it fills up again.
The balloon, flipper, and thruster have a timer of 1.0 seconds, which takes 2.8 seconds to refill from empty, while the turbo-charger has a timer of 1.5 seconds, taking 4.2 seconds to refill from empty.
