• The whole level is a reference to the Italian tale of Pinocchio, and more precisely to the trope popularized by this story of a giant sea monster capable of swallowing ships and keeping people imprisoned inside it.
• The phrase "Belly of the Beast" originates from a biblical story in the Book of Jonah, where he is swallowed by a giant fish, similar to the Pinocchio story.
