A Paintball is a projectile that serves as ammunition for the Paintinator powerup. It cannot be directly selected from the Popit menu, but can be captured after using a Paintinator to spawn one in Create Mode.
Behaviour
A Paintball is a small, spherical object that is destroyed when colliding with objects, spawning paint drop particles and applying one of a few paint splat stickers onto the object it hits.
Paintball Triggers
Paintballs will trigger a Paintinator Switch on impact; a paintball will increment any switches present on the object by 1, and, if applicable, set the paintball's owner as the activating player of the switch.
Paintballs will also trigger the removed VR Target collectible, collecting it on impact.
Brain Interaction
Paintballs have an additional feature where they will kill any Unprotected Creature Brain they make contact with, awarding 50 points to the player that shot it. This is possible because the paintball has a Enemy Part applied to it when it's emitted; this makes it an enemy part similar to how a creature brain is an enemy part, allowing the detection. Without this part applied in the original LittleBigPlanet, the paintball will crash the game when colliding with any object.
Player Ownership
Paintballs shot by players carry information about which player fired them, which allows Paintinator Switches to tell who shot it. It will also inherit the owner's Popit colour, which extends to the particles and stickers left behind, but this is only set when the paintball is first spawned; if the owner changes their Player Colour after shooting a paintball but before it hits something, the paintball's colour will not update. If a paintball is spawned by an unowned Sackbot, or captured and spawned from an Emitter it will not contain any such player data, and thus will appear white (unless it was previously captured with a set colour, in which case it will be retained).
Impact Speed
The paintball's Physics Material has a minimum breaking velocity of 20.0 units; this means that moving at speeds of approximately 2.8 units on a Mover or lower, the paintball won't splatter. Any speeds higher and it will splatter upon colliding with objects.
Collision Flags
The Paintball has unique collision flags that determine how it collides with existing objects.
The Collide Type flags for the paintball are 010000, which determines how other objects will ignore it.
The Collide Ignore flags for the paintball are 111000, meaning it won't collide with objects that use the first three flags.
The only material to use the first flag is enemy_dead.mat, which means the paintball will ignore any creature parts that are being destroyed, or any object with the Collapse destroy affect applied to it.
The only material to use the second flag is the paintball itself, meaning it won't collide with other paintballs.
The third flag is used by magicwall.mat, a special material that is used to keep players in bounds when a scoreboard is activated, meaning paintballs will still pass through the barrier.
Water Interaction
In the original LittleBigPlanet, paintballs will float when landing in Water. In LittleBigPlanet 2 and onwards, paintballs will self destruct when entering water, disappearing with no splatter effects.
Background Interaction
In the original LittleBigPlanet, paintballs are able to apply paint splat stickers to the level's background; this works because backgrounds in that game are comprised of individual models. Background models within the range of the level boundaries will have the paint splat stickers applied to them. In LittleBigPlanet 2, backgrounds were changed to use the Static Mesh format; while this came with many improvements, it won't trigger the splat generation as the static mesh isn't within the range of the level boundaries.
