A bolt is a type of connector that joins two objects on adjacent layers, rotating them on a pivot. There are four types of bolts that rotate objects in different ways.
Usage and behaviour
Bolts can be placed onto most solid objects, though unlike gadgets, they can only be placed on the front of objects, and cannot be rotated while held with the Popit Cursor. When placing a bolt onto an object, if another object is one layer behind the target, the two objects will automatically be bolted together once placed, rotating around the bolt's position. Alternatively, a bolt can be placed on an isolated object, then moved in front of another object with the Popit Cursor; a power drill sound effect will play to confirm the connection; this method does not work in LittleBigPlanet on PSP though.
The models used by bolts are split into two components that rotate with the bolted objects. For example, on a Motor Bolt, the interior copper wiring rotates with the object in front, while the beige outer casing rotates with the object behind it.
The two bolted objects rotate in different directions from one another, e.g. if a Motor Bolt is set to rotate Clockwise, the front object will rotate clockwise, but the back object will actually rotate counter-clockwise, and vice-versa.
Most bolts have their own set of tweaks, but all four share a Strength tweak, known as Tightness in the original LittleBigPlanet, which affects how susceptible the bolted object is to external forces. How this is used in practice varies slightly depending on the bolt type, and will be detailed in their respective sections. The other tweaks shared between bolts are as follows:
Visible in Play Mode: ( ) Determines whether or not the object will be rendered in Play Mode. |
Mute (LBP3 Only): ( No; Yes) Sets whether or not to play the bolt's associated rotation sound effects. |

The Bolt is the simplest of the bolt connectors, acting as little more than a pivot; an object connected by a bolt can rotate freely, but will not move laterally.
Tweak
Strength: (0% - 100%) Affects how tight the bolt is screwed in. At 0%, the bolt is very loose and objects will spin freely; at 100%, the bolt is incredibly tight and objects do not rotate. |

The Spring Bolt, known as the Sprung Bolt in the original LittleBigPlanet, will attempt to keep the bolted object facing a specific direction with springy connection, hence the name.
Tweaks
Angle
Angle: (0 - 360) Sets the angle that the bolted object will attempt to maintain, indicated by a green arrow. |
Strength
Strength: (0% - 100%) Affects how much effort the bolt exerts to maintain its original orientation. |

The Motor Bolt continuously rotates a bolted object in one direction.
The two objects will rotate in different directions depending on their layer positioning and the bolt's settings; if a Motor Bolt is set to rotate clockwise, the object in front will rotate in the expected direction, but the object behind will actually rotate counter-clockwise, and vice-versa.
Tweaks
Speed
Speed: (0 - 1,500) Sets how fast the Motor Bolt rotates, visualized by a rotating hexagon in front of the bolt. |
Direction: (File:Tweak Direction Clockwise.png Clockwise; File:Tweak Direction CounterClockwise.png Anti-Clockwise) Determines which direction the Motor Bolt rotates in. |
Strength
Strength: (0% - 100%) Affects how strong the motor's rotation is. At 0%, the bolt has no effect and the objects will spin freely; at 100%, the objects will rotate in accordance with the Motor Bolt's tweak settings. |
