Safety first!
This page is a work in progress. As a result, the layout and/or content herein may be subject to change.
To do:
  • Document how the outputs work.
  • Add the Wobble Bolt's tweaks.

A bolt is a type of connector that joins two objects on adjacent layers, rotating them on a pivot. There are four types of bolts that rotate objects in different ways.

Usage and behaviour

Bolts can be placed onto most solid objects, though unlike gadgets, they can only be placed on the front of objects, and cannot be rotated while held with the Popit Cursor. When placing a bolt onto an object, if another object is one layer behind the target, the two objects will automatically be bolted together once placed, rotating around the bolt's position. Alternatively, a bolt can be placed on an isolated object, then moved in front of another object with the Popit Cursor; a power drill sound effect will play to confirm the connection; this method does not work in LittleBigPlanet on PSP though.

The models used by bolts are split into two components that rotate with the bolted objects. For example, on a Motor Bolt, the interior copper wiring rotates with the object in front, while the beige outer casing rotates with the object behind it.

The two bolted objects rotate in different directions from one another, e.g. if a Motor Bolt is set to rotate Clockwise, the front object will rotate clockwise, but the back object will actually rotate counter-clockwise, and vice-versa.

Shared tweaks

Most bolts have their own set of tweaks, but all four share a Strength tweak, known as Tightness in the original LittleBigPlanet, which affects how susceptible the bolted object is to external forces. How this is used in practice varies slightly depending on the bolt type, and will be detailed in their respective sections. The other tweaks shared between bolts are as follows:

Tweak Visual Visibility.png
Visible in Play Mode: (

YesYes
)

Determines whether or not the object will be rendered in Play Mode.
Mute (LBP3 Only): (Tweak GenericSetting No.png No; Tweak GenericSetting Yes.png Yes)
Sets whether or not to play the bolt's associated rotation sound effects.

Bolt

Outputs: 0 (LBP1)

The Bolt is the simplest of the bolt connectors, acting as little more than a pivot; an object connected by a bolt can rotate freely, but will not move laterally.

Tweak

Strength: (0% - 100%)
Affects how tight the bolt is screwed in. At 0%, the bolt is very loose and objects will spin freely; at 100%, the bolt is incredibly tight and objects do not rotate.

Spring Bolt

Type: Gadgets
Category: Connectors
Inputs: 0
Outputs: 0

The Spring Bolt, known as the Sprung Bolt in the original LittleBigPlanet, will attempt to keep the bolted object facing a specific direction with springy connection, hence the name.

Tweaks

Angle

Angle: (0 - 360)
Sets the angle that the bolted object will attempt to maintain, indicated by a green arrow.

Strength

Strength: (0% - 100%)
Affects how much effort the bolt exerts to maintain its original orientation.

Motor Bolt

Outputs: 0 (LBP1)

The Motor Bolt continuously rotates a bolted object in one direction.

The two objects will rotate in different directions depending on their layer positioning and the bolt's settings; if a Motor Bolt is set to rotate clockwise, the object in front will rotate in the expected direction, but the object behind will actually rotate counter-clockwise, and vice-versa.

Tweaks

Speed

Tweak InputAction SpeedScale.png
Speed: (0 - 1,500)
Sets how fast the Motor Bolt rotates, visualized by a rotating hexagon in front of the bolt.
Direction: (File:Tweak Direction Clockwise.png Clockwise; File:Tweak Direction CounterClockwise.png Anti-Clockwise)
Determines which direction the Motor Bolt rotates in.

Strength

Strength: (0% - 100%)
Affects how strong the motor's rotation is. At 0%, the bolt has no effect and the objects will spin freely; at 100%, the objects will rotate in accordance with the Motor Bolt's tweak settings.

Motion

Input Action: (see below)
Determines how the Motor Bolt responds to the signal it receives through its input.
  • Tweak BehaviorSetting OnOff.png On / Off: The Motor Bolt starts rotating when it receives a digital ON signal, and stops when it's turned OFF.
  • Tweak BehaviorSetting Directional.png Forwards / Backwards: If the bolt receives a digital ON signal, the Motor Bolt rotates in the direction specified by the Direction tweak; if OFF, it rotates in the opposite direction.
  • Tweak BehaviorSetting OneShot.png Single Cycle: Each time the Motor Bolt receives a digital ON signal, it performs one full rotation, then stops at its original position.
  • Tweak InputAction SpeedScale.png Speed Scale: The Motor Bolt's speed is determined by the strength of the incoming analogue signal.

The Wobble Bolt rotates the bolted object between two points.
