The Jetpack is a powerup in the LittleBigPlanet series that grants users the ability to fly when equipped.

Overview

The Jetpack can be equipped by running past it, either on the same layer or within two adjacent layers of it. When equipped, players can freely fly through the air using Left stick to move and Cross button to speed up. Unless tweaked otherwise, pressing Circle button will manually remove the Jetpack, however, should the user bump into anything lethal, be submerged in water or be slapped by another Sackthing, they will instantly lose the powerup. In most games, players equipped with a Jetpack will automatically shift to the frontmost layer, obstructions not withstanding. In LittleBigPlanet 3, players no longer change layers while using the Jetpack.

The Jetpack comes in tethered and tetherless varieties; aside from the different model used to represent the object in a level, the only functional difference between the two is whether or not the player is tethered to an object. With the original tethered Jetpack, players are bound to whichever Jetpack object they most recently passed by, limiting where they can fly depending on the object's position, the length of its teather and whether or not it's glued to anything.

In the inital release of LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet PSP, only the tethered version of the Jetpack could be used. However, a tetherless variant was added in Creator Pack 1, which has appeared alongside the original in nearly every game since. Prior to Creator Pack 1, a similar effect could be achieved by crushing the Jetpack with a heavy object after the player equipped it. However, this cannot be done in LittleBigPlanet PSP, as the powerup will automatically be removed from the player if the Jetpack object is destroyed, or the player is forcibly moved outside of the tether's range.

Other appearances

  • LittleBigPlanet Karting
    • The Jetpack appears as a make-shift boost pad, granting karts a short speed boost when driving over its pedestal.
  • Run Sackboy! Run!
    • From Avalonia onwards, the Jetpack can be encountered on the track, and running into it initiates a minigame where Sackboy has to fly into as many Score Bubbles as possible.
  • PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
    • The Jetpack is used for some of Sackboy's attacks, as well as one of his unlockable intro animations.
