It’s off to the Factory of a Better Tomorrow to mass produce an army of Sackbots to stop the Negativitron. Somewhat predictably the Negativitron has beaten the Alliance there and has brainwashed the poor Sackbots into his servitude. Sort it out, Sackthing.

Unseen Theme description

The Factory Of A Better Tomorrow is the third theme in LittleBigPlanet 2 and the creation of Clive Handforth. The theme is designed around soviet retrofuturism and robotics.[1]

Overview

Description

The Factory Of A Better Tomorrow teaches the basics of one of LittleBigPlanet 2's biggest additions - Sackbots. Much of The Factory's gameplay involves guiding Sackbots through hazards, with levels taking advantage of the Sackbots' ability to navigate and work with players. Other returning features like explosives are used heavily.

Plot overview

Sackboy and Larry Da Vinci track Victoria Von Bathysphere's Sackbot army to the Factory Of A Better Tomorrow, where those not stolen away by the Negativitron have gotten themselves lost inside. The Factory's manager, Clive Handforth, is left reeling after his factory's devastation by the Negativitron and advises the Alliance to enter the factory further if they wish to recover the army. Once inside, Sackboy helps ease the possessed Sackbots back to their former selves, where they assist their saviour in clearing out the Meanies swarming the factory's machinery.

The Negativitron makes one final attempt to halt the Alliance's departure by sending Copernicus, Clive's guard turkey, in pursuit of the fleeing Sackbots. The Alliance disposes of Copernicus before setting their sights on a rendezvous with Avalon Centrifuge in his home base of Avalonia.

History

Development

Referred to internally as Popov Factory and, later, Clive's Factory, The Factory Of A Better Tomorrow's role in LittleBigPlanet 2's Story Mode remained relatively unchanged throughout much of its development, albeit with significant stylistic differences. Based on early concept art, renders, and developer descriptions of The Factory's art direction, the theme was originally designed around industrial imagery, with a particular emphasis on "punky" and "edgy" designs.[1] Some of these designs were based on Victorian-era industrialism, which would nearly all be inherited by Victoria's Laboratory once The Factory's art style shifted towards retro-futurism.

Popov Factory, the theme's early name, referred to the early antagonistic faction for LittleBigPlanet 2's story, the Popovs, who would themselves be renamed to meanies.

Post-release

The Factory Of A Better Tomorrow would make another appearance in the LittleBigPlanet 3: The Journey Home DLC Pack in the levels the Flight Shift and Swoop de Loop. The prior features Swoop as she helps Clive Handforth relieve the factory from an emergency lockdown. The Factory Of A Better Tomorrow is notably shown to be in a recovered state in the DLC, with much of the factory now restored since the Negativitron's attack.

Quotes

With Victoria’s lab cleared of meanies, it’s time to mass manufacture your army of Sackbots. It’s time to head to Clive Handforth’s Factory of a Better Tomorrow, but predictably, the Factory has been taken over by meanies, and those Sackbots trapped inside aren’t going to rescue themselves!
