Clive Handforth, "The Sad Song Of Clive Handforth"

Clive Handforth is a major character in LittleBigPlanet 2, and the creator curator of the Factory Of A Better Tomorrow. He is responsible for managing the factory and assists in recovering the Alliance's Sackbot army.

History

LittleBigPlanet 2

Clive Handforth is a frequent reoccurring character through the latter half of LittleBigPlanet 2's story, with the majority of his appearances being in the Factory Of A Better Tomorrow and Eve's Asylum. He makes his first appearance in the Factory Of A Better Tomorrow, where Sackboy and Larry Da Vinci find him devastated by the destruction of his factory by the Negativitron. While the Alliance seeks out the Sackbot army trapped within the factory walls, Sackboy helps dispatch the invading meanies and reclaim Clive's creation from the Negativitron's control. Clive, uplifted by this victory, joins the Alliance on their journey up to Avalonia.

Clive is seldom seen around Avalonia, as Avalon Centrifuge brushes him aside to do menial labour while he and Da Vinci tend to Sackboy's pilot training. After the Negativitron attacks Avalonia and downs Huge Spaceship, the Alliance decides on retrieving renowned inventor Dr. Herbert Higginbotham to fix the situation. However, the doctor, ailing from a meanie infection contracted at Clive's factory, is contained inside Eve's Asylum For The Mentally Alternative and out of the Alliance's immediate reach. Clive, wracked with guilt about Dr. Higginbotham's state, joins Sackboy on a voyage to Eve's Asylum to liberate the doctor.

During Eve's Asylum, Clive Handforth frequently appears, accompanied by the asylum's caretaker Eve Silva Paragorica. With Sackboy's help the three extinguish the asylum's meanie-ravaged chakras and cure Dr. Higginbotham's mind of its meanies. Once the four Alliance members return to Avalonia, Clive attempts to convince Avalon Centrifuge to end his triumphant speech and join the rest of the creators in departing for the Cosmos, but it is too late - the Negativitron descends and kidnaps Avalon while the rest of the Alliance witnesses from within the newly repaired Huge Spaceship. Clive, along with the rest of the Alliance and the battle-trained Sackbot army, rescue Avalon from the Negativitron's clutches, before descending into its heart; Clive aids Sackboy in the final battle.

The Journey Home

Main article: The Flight Shift.

Clive Handforth makes a major appearance in the Journey Home DLC. After Larry Da Vinci's reunion party invitations are lost across Craftworld, Swoop travels to the Factory Of A Better Tomorrow to retrieve those lost within the factory. Clive's factory has seen a resurgence since the Negativitron's defeat, and he has apparently risen to a comfortable position as manager; Clive spectates Swoop's progress as she restores the factory from lockdown. Clive is one of multiple creator curators that later joins the reunion party in the Gardens.

General information

Physical appearance

Clive is constructed from various office supplies. His head is made from a white notepad, with his face doodled on in splotchy blue scribbles. His body is made from a small eraser, and his limbs from bent and linked paper clips. His cut paper extremities sit pierced on the ends of the clips. When expressing emotions, Clive's face temporarily turns into a mess of scribbles, before correcting itself to reflect his mood.

Personality

Clive is pessimistic, sarcastic, and usually non-plussed by the events around him. When he is initially found in his factory's remains, he self-indulgently grieves over his downfall, letting the possessed Sackbot army gradually overrun the facility. When interacting with fellow Alliance members, Clive reacts little to their optimism, occasionally making dry-humored jokes and remarks at the expense of others. When his factory is saved from the Meanies, Clive reveals a short glimpse of optimism and gratitude toward Sackboy.

After the Negativitron's defeat, Clive restores his position as manager of the factory, developing a relaxed and unenthusiastic temperament toward his job despite his success.
