Ice Tool
Popit Function
Type: Hazard Tool
Game: LittleBigPlanet

The Ice Tool, also known as the Freezatron or Ice Hazard, was a scrapped danger tool that would freeze players through sustained contact. The popit item for the tool itself and some files from it are still present in the final game, but it has no functionality and is unobtainable through normal means.

Usage

The Ice Tool functions in the same manner as the other hazard tools. It can be used on any object or material in any layer, as long as it has a hitbox. With the tool equipped, pressing X on any applicable object will apply the ice hazard, and the hazard can be removed by pressing X again or by using the Unlethalise Tool.

Objects lethalized with ice are visually tinted white with a transparent layer of frost and emit a white mist, reminiscent of dry ice.

Interaction

Touching

When a Player touches an object lethalized with ice, they will begin to play a shiver animation accompanied with a teeth chattering sound effect.
Any players in contact with ice will behave as if they're on a surface with zero friction and slide around without any walk input, regardless of the material's base friction.

Each Player has an internal ice touch counter limited to 3 touches before they enter the frozen state.
Remaining in contact with the hazard for an extended period will increment the counter by 1 for every 20 frames (0.6 seconds), meaning the player will be frozen after 40 frames (1.2 seconds) from their initial contact.
Coming into contact with ice will also increment the counter, so touching ice 3 times (such as jumping on it) will also freeze the player.

A player's touch counter will only reset when a player lands on the ground again, meaning that even if they are in the air for an extended period, the counter will not reset.

Frozen State

When a Player is frozen they will enter the frozen state, spawning an ice block around them and freezing their animation in place. The Player's material and hitbox will be changed when in the frozen state, making their hitbox bigger and swapping their physics material from yellowhead.mat to frozenhead.mat. Players in the frozen state will also have their gyroscope disabled and can rotate freely instead of constantly being upright.

The frozen state causes the Player to behave as a frictionless, solid object that occupies the Thick sub-layer, and just like normal Players they can still pass in front of Thin sub-layer objects such as the Checkpoint.

In the frozen state, Players' interaction with the game world is hindered; while they can trigger buttons, levers, and sensor switches, they cannot interact with anything containing a trigger part, meaning they cannot collect bubbles, pop unprotected creature brains, or activate checkpoints, race gates, close-level posts, jetpacks, or scoreboards.

Players in the frozen state are completely immobilized and cannot open their Popit, though from an oversight the Popit will remain open if it was still open when the Player was frozen.

Players can only escape from the frozen state by shaking their controller up and down, which may have played a part in its removal as not all controllers supported gyro systems.

Multiplayer Interactions

Other Players can interact with and collide with frozen Players, allowing them to grabbed, moved around, and be used as platforms to jump off of.
A bug caused from the way grabbing is handled will sometimes cause a frozen Player to layer-shift to a grabbing-Player's layer, instead of the grabbing Player shifting to the frozen Player's layer.

If a Player performs a slap attack on a frozen Player, their ice block will shatter instantly and the slapped Player will be killed.

Death

If a Player is touching ice while in the frozen state, after around 60 frames (2 seconds) the ice block will shatter, killing them. However, if a Player is not touching ice while in the frozen state, they will remain frozen indefinitely until they either break free or interact with something else in the environment.

If a Player in the frozen state collides with a solid object with enough force or gets crushed by a suitably heavy object, the ice block will be shattered and the Player will be killed.

Any Player in the frozen state will also be killed if they collide with another lethal hazard, with the new hazard's death animation taking priority.
The only intentional interaction with the frozen appears to be for Fire, as steam particles will be emitted when a frozen player is killed.
Interactions with other hazards such as Electricity, Gas, and Spikes all seem to be unfinished.

Translation Data

The translation data for the tool contains a joke left in the developers, and was likely never updated since its initial inclusion.
