These checkpoints are a bit trickier to chase down. You'll quickly run out time if you don't quickly take to the Drift Boost feature that your local kart salesman threw in to close the sale.
To get a boost, hold down the DRIFT button through a turn until you see flames coming off the back of your kart. Then release the DRIFT button for an instant kick in the pants.
