LittleBigPlanet Karting, abbreviated as LBPK is a 2012 racing game for the PlayStation 3 that has a heavy emphasis on user-generated content. The game sees players driving customizible go-karts racing each other through hand-crafted race tracks set in a variety of locations, both familiar and new. Like previous LittleBigPlanet titles, the story mode contains collectable materials, stickers and other items that players are encouraged to use in the creation of their own race tracks and battle arenas, which can be shared and played with other people from around the world.
The game was developed by Canadian developer United Front Games and SCE San Diego Studio under guidance from Media Molecule, and published by Sony Computer Entertainment internationally in early November 2012, with Japan getting the game roughly two months later.
The game's online servers were shut down on July 2, 2018, after previously being scheduled to shut down on August 31, 2016.
ModNation Racers content
ModNation Racers 2
In the early stages of development, United Front Games had originally pitched LittleBigPlanet Karting as a sequel to their then successful and newly introduced racing IP ModNation Racers, called ModNation Racers 2, which development began possibly some days after the release of the first game.
This rejected sequel to ModNation Racers would've featured new customizing options for karts, tracks and characters Mods, as well as brand new content, some of which ended up both in the spin-off for PlayStation Vita (new power-ups), and even LittleBigPlanet Karting by itself (more advanced track creation, new kart customizing options).
LittleBigPlanet Karting still has a few remnants of ModNation Racers 2 inside of the files, both in the Milestone 4 prototype and on the retail video game.
Unused Tag's kart
The retail 1.0 version of LittleBigPlanet Karting contains unused models for a kart body that's based on the kart that Tag, main character and mascot of ModNation Racers used in the game. All models for this kart body exists for all suspension types, but shadow textures associated to the kart body are no where to be seen. This kart body can be seen in early trailers of the game.
Tag's costume
The only officially released piece of LittleBigPlanet Karting media related to its spiritual predecessor, is Tag's costume, which was actually released for all LittleBigPlanet PS3 titles, as well as LittleBigPlanet PS Vita.
