To do: think of something mildly witty to put in here.

To do:

  • Source the developer quotes - I don't remember what interview I read that they removed it over quality concerns, I just know that it's true.
  • Cover more prerelease information in the History section.
This article is about The scrapped English Seaside theme from the original LittleBigPlanet. For the England theme centered around a medieval kingdom and yard decor, see The Gardens. For similarly titled pages, see Seaside (disambiguation).

The Seaside, commonly known by its internal name, English Seaside, was a scrapped theme for the original LittleBigPlanet. Its assets and levels were based around coastal English piers and harbors, as well as traditional pirates and sea monsters. Its background was also based on the Brighton Palace Pier in Brighton, England. Despite being featured quite prominently in prerelease media, it was cut late in development due to quality concerns and time constraints.[citation needed]

History

Development

A player aboard a pirate ship in the Seaside.

After LittleBigPlanet's original locations changed art direction to focus more on real-world locations, the Seaside was conceptualized as one of three England locations. As the total number of themes was polished and reduced, The Seaside remained as the second location of England, and as the second overall world of the Story mode. As the Story progressed further however, The Seaside would end up getting scrapped very late into the game's development cycle, with the developers explaining this was due to the lack of quality compared to other levels in the game, as well as not having enough time to improve them. Following its late removal, the Seaside's assets and ideas were spread throughout the rest of the series in various other locations, such as other Story themes and post-release DLC. Most assets went into various Story locations including The Gardens, The Savannah, and The Metropolis, though some aspects ended up being repurposed for post-release downloadable content.

Legacy

As mentioned before, some aspects of The Seaside ended up being used for DLC later down the line - with the developers even mentioning plans on re-releasing the theme as a DLC[citation needed]. Though this never directly happened - The Pirates of the Caribbean Level Kit would later be released late into the original LittleBigPlanet's lifespan, featuring similar aspects of revolving around traditional pirates and the sea.

During the development of the cancelled LittleBigPlanet HUB, the idea of a seaside pier theme was reused for the game's unique Introduction level, featuring completely new assets and an overhauled version of the original Seaside background. Ultimately, the updated Seaside, along with the rest of LittleBigPlanet HUB, would be scrapped upon the game's silent cancellation.

In August 2016, the Seaside Surprise Level Kit released for LittleBigPlanet 3, which would reuse and further polish the updated Seaside from LittleBigPlanet HUB's original introduction level in a unique level kit.
