LittleBigPlanet 3, abbreviated as LBP3, is the final LittleBigPlanet game released for the PlayStation 3, the first on PlayStation 4, and the eighth installment in the overall series. It introduces three new playable characters, an increased layer limit - from three to sixteen - the ability to create custom characters and powerups, various tools for creating multi-level adventures and a plethora of quality of life improvements, all while maintaining compatibility with user generated content from its predecessors.
While Media Molecule supplied the engine and offered guidance in the early stages of production, the majority of development was spearheaded by Sheffield-based developer Sumo Digital, who previously worked on the Cross-Controller Pack for LittleBigPlanet 2. The game was released in late November 2014 to mostly positive critical reception. While praised for its visuals, additions to Create Mode and new gameplay elements, LittleBigPlanet 3 has since garnered an unfortunate reputation as the weakest entry in the main series due to its numerous technical issues and the short length of its Adventure Mode compared to past entries.
While both versions were maintained for much of the game's life, the PlayStation 3 version was discontinued on September 13, 2021 following extended downtime[1].
On April 19, 2024 after another incident of extended downtime, the LBP3 servers were shut down[2], marking the end of online play across the main series for good.
