The Terrain Edit feature allows the player to change the scene's landscape in LittleBigPlanet Karting, making it easy to create huge mountains, deep canyons, and everything in-between.

Overview

The terrain has a height range of roughly 40 grid squares (assuming the grid's scale is set to 5.0) — 10 squares below the starting height, and 30 above.

Materials

At the bottom of the Terrain Edit menu are a set of eight brushes that are used to paint the terrain with different materials.

As with GeoPaint, selecting a material prompts the user to choose a shape, though the choice is more limited by comparison. There is also no dedicated erase function; the only way to get rid of a painted shape without using Undo is to paint over it with another material.

The available materials are determined by the level's background, and they are all mutually exclusive; switching backgrounds will automatically convert any painted materials from the previous theme to the new theme's materials. The vast majority of materials are purely cosmetic, but each theme has one "off-road" material that slows down karts driving on it, indicated by a snail sign on its icon. The assignment of these off-road materials is not consistent between themes.

Below is a list of every theme in the game and their associated terrain materials.

Terrain Clean-up Tool

Terrain Clean-up
Popit Function
Type: Terrain
Games: LittleBigPlanet Karting

The Terrain Clean-up Tool is used to delete portions of edited terrain.

With the clean-up tool selected, hold Cross button and push Left stick to draw a lasso. Once released, if the lasso encompasses edited terrain, the camera will snap to focus on the selection; pressing Triangle button will delete the edits, flattening that region to its default elevation.

The clean-up tool can be somewhat picky when working with larger chunks of terrain, as the selection is not based on the deformed terrain itself, but rather the origin of the brush that made the edit. For example, with the Starry Sculpt, drawing a lasso around one of the star's points won't do anything. But if the player draws a lasso in the centre of the star, the whole thing will be selected and can be deleted. Furthermore, only edits that physically deform the terrain can be deleted; materials are completely unaffected by this tool.
