LittleBigPlanet HUB is an unreleased LittleBigPlanet game developed by Sumo Digital. Announced at Gamescom 2013, the title was to be a free-to-play experience allowing anyone with a PlayStation 3 system to play, create and share their own content.[1] The game would have featured an unrestricted Create Mode in the same vein as LittleBigPlanet 2, and the story modes from both it and its predecessor were intended to be playable, though only the first worlds would have been given out for free.

Despite never being released, various leftovers from the game can be found in the data for both LittleBigPlanet 2 and LittleBigPlanet 3. By examining these remnants the community has been able to piece together information about what was planned for HUB.

History

Not much is known about LittleBigPlanet HUB's development, though it seems to have been developed concurrently with LittleBigPlanet 3. It was initially announced at Gamescom 2013 with a tentative release window of "later this year".[1] A pre-rendered trailer was shown off at the event, though no gameplay or screenshots were released. Sometime in January 2014, information about a private beta had leaked onto the internet.[2] Five screenshots were posted, though very little else is known about this period.

Following the announcement of LittleBigPlanet 3 at E3 2014, the fate of HUB became uncertain, with the shift towards the newly-announced numbered entry being cited as the reason for the lack of updates.[3] At one point Sony considered bringing the game to the PlayStaion 4.[4] Pete Smith told Leon Hurley from Kotaku that they "just got a bit sidetracked with [LittleBigPlanet 3] is the truth of it. Once we introduced PS4 into the mix, it was complicated because would we launch on ps3? Now we want to get everything in order with LBP3, with the dual platform game. Hub will come."

Despite reassurances from Steven and Pete, the silence regarding LittleBigPlanet HUB continued after LittleBigPlanet 3's release. The game appears to have been silently cancelled, though its ultimate fate was never confirmed by anyone working on the franchise. It is speculated that HUB eventually turned into LittleBigPlanet 3, as many of the features and assets originally planned for it had been repurposed and implemented into LBP3 through various updates.
