Game | LittleBigPlanet |
Creator | Captain Victor |
To do: Source the developer quotes - I don't remember what interview I read that they removed it over quality concerns, I just know that it's true. Also, go more in-depth with the asset distribution, maybe with just a better item list. (Something like the prize bubble sections for levels) |
Overview
The Seaside, also known as English Seaside, was a scrapped theme for the original LittleBigPlanet. Its background was based on Brighton Palace Pier, with the levels being themed around pirates and sea monsters. Despite being prominently featured in prerelease media, it was cut late in development due to quality concerns[citation needed].
History
Original Storyline
The theme was intended to take place between The Gardens and The Savannah, with the player taking a boat to get to The Seaside from The Gardens, and then a Submarine to get to The Savannah from The Seaside. The submarine transition still remains in the final game, replacing the boat transition in The Gardens.
Removal
The theme would end up being scrapped very late into the game's development cycle, with the developers explaining this was due to the lack of quality compared to other levels in the game, as well as not having enough time to improve them. The developers have mentioned plans on re-releasing this theme as a DLC later on[citation needed]
Repurposed Content
Quite a lot of seaside content ended up being repurposed for the rest of the game's themes
- The Gardens: Multiple stickers, including scenic ones aswell as multiple sign-related ones.
- The Savannah: Animal-related objects aswell as stickers and decorations.
- The Wedding: A skull and a treasure chest sticker.
- The Canyons: Wood material and miscellaneous stickers had the wood materials and some stickers added to it.
- The Metropolis: Metal materials, the deck chair material, and food-related stickers.
- The Wilderness: Random set of stickers.
- Pirates of the Caribbean Level Kit: Background ambience aswell as gibberish voices.
LittleBigPlanet HUB & 3
Some of the background assets were updated and repurposed for LittleBigPlanet HUB's seaside theme.
After HUB was silently cancelled, most of the content from that iteration was then repurposed for LittleBigPlanet 3's Seaside Surprise Level Kit.
