In-game item description

The Rare Prize Crown, also known as the Competition Winner's Crown or simply the Crown, is a rare costume piece that appears throughout the LittleBigPlanet series. It was originally awarded through creation contests hosted by various fan sites, or by creating something that impressed the developers; recipients were given a twelve-digit code to redeem on the PlayStation Store of their region.

History

Prototype

An early version of the Competition Winner's Crown can be found in the LBP1 Prebeta Build. The design is much simpler than the final game, featuring a smaller, pointed design with no velvet. It also features a unique Plan file located at gamedata/plans/palettes/common_costumes/pal_costumes_preorder_13194.plan, being grouped with other downloadable content costumes in the build that were intended as preorder content.

LittleBigPlanet

First introduced in the original LittleBigPlanet for the PlayStation 3.

LittleBigPlanet PSP

LittleBigPlanet PSP features its own crown costume piece, but unlike its console counterpart this was unlocked in the story mode, awarded for completing High on Rugs. What's noteworthy about this iteration is that it reuses the early version of the crown design from prototype builds of the PlayStation 3 game.

LittleBigPlanet 2

Starting with this game, a special Royalty Pin is awarded whenever the crown is equipped through the Popit.

Two months after the game's release, Media Molecule held five auctions to raise money for Play For Japan. Among these auctions was a special "Regal Edition" of LittleBigPlanet 2, which included a copy of the game with unique "Mm Special Edition" box art, a Royal Sackboy Superstars mini figure, and a download code for the in-game crown.[1] The auction for the Regal Edition ended on April 2, 2011, and sold for $3,550.[2]

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Following in LittleBigPlanet Portable's example, Sackboy: A Big Adventure allows the player to unlock the crown through normal play. In this title, it is awarded for Mastering every level in the game (minus the Knit-Speedrun Challenges). It also appears on the sticker awarded for collecting all of the Dreamer Orbs in Little Big Finale.

Other appearances

  • While the crown is not obtainable in Ultimate Sackboy, a 2D illustration of it is used as part of the message box that appears when a season ends.
  • The Rare Prize Crown appears on the "England" Sackboy in the Sackboy Superstars figure set. A recoloured variant of this figure, known as the platinum king, also exists.

Quotes

Only the most elite of all the Sackfolk on the LittleBigPlanet are invited to join the royal circle, and find themselves eligible for the Prize Crown costume piece. If you want to become anointed, you’ll need to do something exceptional in or around the LittleBigPlanet. Suffice to say, if you see anyone wearing a Prize Crown, they should be revered as one of the great ones!
