I planned to become the Ultimate Creator… but I can see now that I was wrong. Because I was always better than you!

Newton Pud, "The Heroes FINALLY Defeat Newton - Oh"

Newton Pud is a major character and the secondary antagonist of LittleBigPlanet 3's story mode. A rebellious, insecure inventor failing to live up to his parents' legacies and the expectations of others, Newton's incompetence threatens the destruction of planet Bunkum when he unleashes the ancient Titans.[1]

History

Newton Pud was born from renowned creator curators Nana Pud and Captain Pud.[2] Being the son of two brilliant creators, Newton was expected to follow in their footsteps and rise to greatness.[1] This was not the case, as Newton failed the first term of the Popit Academy and subsequently flunked out.[1] Between his youth and the events of LittleBigPlanet 3's story mode, Newton turned his attention towards the Titans and the power they once held over Bunkum before being vanquished by the three heroes. This in turn sparked rebellion towards his parents, particularly towards his mother who guarded the Titans in her manor.

During the events of LittleBigPlanet 3's story mode, Newton takes interest in Sackboy, forcibly transporting him from Craftworld to his neighboring planet of Bunkum. After Sackboy crash lands in Needlepoint Peaks, Newton arrives to greet him to Bunkum, its Creative Heart, and the tale of the three heroes who saved the planet from ruin long ago. With the heroes retired to their resting places around Bunkum, the Titans who once threatened it stir once more. Newton takes Sackboy up into his airship, where he arms his "co-conspirator" with the Pumpinator - an invention that Newton neglects to mention was his father's creation rather than his own. Newton lays out plans to infiltrate the Titans' resting place at Stitchem Manor - the residence of the reclusive Nana Pud, who Newton claims will soon be responsible for the Titans' reawakening.[3] That night, Newton sends Sackboy into Stitchem Manor, which Nana Pud has rigged with dangerous traps to halt Sackboy's progress towards the manor's rooftop.

After Sackboy successfully defeats Nana Pud's guardian, Newton descends to greet Nana Pud who reveals herself as Newton's mother and the one responsible for protecting the Titans. Nana Pud laments Newton's manipulation of Sackboy, though Newton insists that the Titans' freedom could be used to Bunkum's benefit. Despite Nana Pud's objections, Newton opens the lid containing the Titans, reassuring the two that Bunkum will prosper with their power in his possession; the Titans quickly overwhelm Newton, corrupting his body. With his mind possessed and former self lost, Newton sets off to steal all of Bunkum's creativity for himself. Nana Pud angerly scolds Sackboy for encouraging Newton in his foolish plans, believing he knew no better about the Titans' corruptive power. Wishing to see her son saved, she and Sackboy set off to Manglewood Swamp to reawaken Bunkum's three heroes and see about the Titans' defeat once more.

In Manglewood, word gets out about Newton beginning his theft of Bunkum's creativity.[4] With help from movie star Marlon Random, Sackboy collects the three marbles needed to free OddSock, the first of the heroes. On the way to the Ziggurat, Sackboy meets Newton for the first time since his corruption, and Newton flaunts his ambitions of becoming the greatest creator at Bunkum's expense. As Newton departs, the first of the three Titans exits his body, assembling a monstrous form for itself from Manglewood's surroundings. After OddSock weakens the Titan and returns it to its resting place, Marlon Random provides the two with a quick way to the Ziggurat to continue their pursuit of Newton.

Arriving at Ziggurat Grand Hall, things appear in a similar condition as Manglewood, as Newton's spree of destruction has continued even despite two Titans remaining. Sackboy assists Papal Mache with recovering Toggle's three marbles lost around the Ziggurat. Now missing only one hero, Sackboy, OddSock, and Toggle prepare to descend into Bunkum Lagoon. Newton reappears once more to taunt the heroes about his capture of Bunkum's Creative Heart within Bunkum Lagoon.[5] The second Titan leaves his body, manifesting itself as a collection of chains and locks. Toggle flees the Titan, crushing it beneath a pile of rubble.

Newton's mobile fortress sits within Bunkum Lagoon, trapping away the Creative Heart from the rest of the planet. Creator curator Pinky Buflooms expresses fury towards the damage Newton has caused, assisting Sackboy in the recovery of Swoop's two marbles. As the three await Swoop's return from above Bunkum Lagoon, Newton descends and nearly succeeds in dispatching Sackboy, though his plan falls short when Swoop arrives. Newton pursues Swoop but fails in his attempts to halt her progress as the four heroes evade him. Retreating to his fortress, Newton holds Sackboy hostage with the threat of vaporization if the heroes make any further attempt at saving Bunkum.[6] Despite expressing confidence in his capabilities, Newton's poor craftsmanship leads to his fortress' defenses failing; the heroes enter and disable the mechanism holding Sackboy.

With Newton overpowered, the final Titan leaves his body, causing Newton to collapse. Inside his mind, Newton stands up for himself against his insecurities and shortcomings as a creator. Regaining consciousness and control of his faculties, Newton realizes the extent of what he has done to Bunkum while the final Titan assembles a body for itself out of the fortress. Newton's newfound confidence encourages him to make a stand against the Titan, which swallows him whole. The four heroes descend into the Titan's mechanical interior to free Newton, leading to its destruction and containment. Newton's fortress collapses, freeing the Creative Heart and the rest of Newton's stolen creative energy.

Newton reunites with his father, Captain Pud, who lectures his son about the Titans and the mess he made. Back at Stitchem Manor, Newton repairs a Dimensional Doorway to Craftworld, where Sackboy and the three heroes prepare their imminent return. As they depart, Newton gives a glamorous and inaccurate retelling of the final battle's events to his parents.[7]

Despite being tasked with handling the Dimensional Doorway, Newton calibrates it incorrectly, overshooting the destination at the Gardens and causing the events of the Journey Home.

General information

Physical appearance

Newton has a large light bulb as head with its inner filaments acting as his eyes and mouth. He wears a purple coat with a mulberry jacket underneath, featuring grey lapels and two buttons of the same color, pants matching the jacket, boots with cardboard soles and a black bowler hat whose crown resembles a kitchen timer egg, adorned with a red triangular arrow and a hatband with numbered marks every five minutes.

Personality

Newton is pompous and cheerful in his demeanor, quickly seeking Sackboy's allegiance after bringing him to Bunkum. However, much of Newton's enthusiasm covers for his deep insecurities about his mediocrity as an inventor. In the end, Newton's ambitions reach far beyond what he can handle, as he is incapable of foreseeing the threat the unleashed Titans could bring unto Bunkum. During his time possessed by the Titans, Newton gives in fully to his worst traits, with his one goal being to become the Ultimate Creator through any means necessary. It is only once all the Titans leave Newton's body that he is able to confront these traits head-on.
