Bunkum Lagoon
(Illustrated revision)
Game: LittleBigPlanet 3
Back to: Bunkum Lagoon

Bunkum Lagoon was the fourth story mode theme during development on LittleBigPlanet 3's second story pass, wherein the game briefly received an "illustrated" art-style;[note 1] it was designed around colourful and abstract landscapes and treetops.

Overview

This iteration of Bunkum Lagoon appeared prominently in one LittleBigPlanet 3's internal trailers created around early 2012.[1] Much of the trailer's visual style is notable for straying away from the grounded look of previous entries in favor of oddly-proportioned and flat-textured set-pieces. Additionally, much of the geometry present in these levels were constructed from objects and decorations as opposed to primitive materials. Much of Bunkum Lagoon was designed around a 30-layer limit for levels; players would travel between distant layers in the hub using cannons, rails, and grabbable animals.

Seemingly sharing the same hub-world idea carried through the rest of LittleBigPlanet 3's development, Bunkum Lagoon's was set in a treetop village filled with colourful, decorated wooden houses, large birds, and lush foliage. Miscellaneous townfolk, Pinky Booflums, and the Spiv would inhabit the area, providing the player with quests or collectables. The internal trailer demonstrates planned quest and shop systems that players could find by interacting with these NPCs, such as purchasing a brolly power-up from the Spiv using a button currency found throughout the hub.[note 2]

The transition into LittleBigPlanet 3's second pass apparently marked the beginning of asset reuse that became commonplace throughout its development cycle, with collectibles originating from 2011 themes such as Le Carneval Bizarre and Jacob's Well used in varying amounts throughout Bunkum Lagoon. The opposite was true for this era, as the highly contrasting illustrated style was dropped by mid-2012 and was mostly contained in these tailor-made levels.

Notes

  1. Leftovers from what is presumably the beginning of this pass can be found in the th_08illustrated_style_test directory, dating back as far as November 2011.
  2. It is unclear if this shop system was fully implemented, as the UI used in the internal trailer is visibly edited in post.
