The Whirltool, known as the Craft Cutter in early development, is a throwable boomerang powerup in Sackboy: A Big Adventure, introduced in the Colossal Canopy level: A Cut Above The Rest.
Overview
When the Whirltool is equipped, tapping will throw it in the direction Sackboy is facing. Alternatively, the player can hold the button and use to aim, releasing to throw it; if the player does this in mid-air, Sackboy will briefly halt his downward velocity to give the player a chance to aim at something on their way down. Once thrown, the Whirltool will fly through the air for about one second, rebounding off of any solid objects it collides with, before returning to its owner.
As the Whirltool travels, it will collect certain items (including Score Bubbles, both kinds of Collectabell, Prize Bubbles, Extra Life tokens, and Multiplier Bubbles), cut certain contextual ropes, and deal one slap's worth of damage to whatever it touches; this is enough to destroy most enemies and breakables with one throw, but larger crates and certain enemies may require two throws to dispatch. Wirlwolves are among the only enemies in the game that can counter the Whirltool; if it collides with one while performing its spin attack, the Whirltool will get caught circling the Whirlwolf for a few seconds before returning to its owner.
Auto-Targeting
If the Whirltool is thrown in the general direction of certain items (whether Sackboy is facing it head on or is angled slightly away from it), it will move towards them. If after it reaches its target there is another targetable object close by, it will start moving towards that as well. For example, if it encounters a trail of Score Bubbles, it will try to follow that trail.
Switches
- Main article: Whirltool Switch
The Whirltool can also be used as a makeshift gear to power Whirltool Switches. If thrown into a Whirltool Switch, it will begin spinning to power whatever the switch is connected to; the player will be unable to use it again until the mechanism ejects it; how long this takes varies between switches.
Teleporters
Introduced in the Interstellar Junction are gelatenous teleporter pads; when a Whirltool is thrown into one of these pads, the owner will be instantly teleported to the Whirltool's position.
