Image Guidelines

Image Guidelines

There are rules you'll need to follow when uploading images to the wiki, be sure to follow them!

Sourcing Media

If you're looking to upload an image, Do NOT just take the first result for an image you find with a search engine like Google, and do not take images from other Wiki sites.
Google and other sites will add their own compression to the image; if you CAN'T seem to find an image outside of unofficial sources, ask before uploading the image.
When you're sourcing media such as Concept Art, Renders, or other images outside of game files, we want them to be from an official source!
There are many places to source official media from, such as the archived LittleBigPlanet website, fansite kits, media assets discs, and other promotional material.
Wherever you source an image from, you should list the source in the image description.

Ripping Textures

If you want to upload a texture from a game, please rip the texture yourself instead of getting it from an external website.
When extracting images from the mainline games, try to use the latest version of toolkit to extract images, and don't use any older programs like farctool as they have inaccuracies in extracting images.
Other tools besides toolkit will be required to extract textures from LittleBigPlanet PSP, LittleBigPlanet Karting, Run Sackboy Run, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure.
Please check the Imagisphere Discord for information on extracting those textures.

Optimizing and Editing Images

Generally, when uploading a Ripped Graphic, you should NOT edit it, with few exceptions..
We want to keep images uploaded on the wiki under a reasonable size (under 10 MB), so if an image is too large to fit on the wiki, you will need to edit it to make it smaller.
When editing any image, avoid using Microsoft Paint as browsers like Firefox won't correctly render colors from PNGs saved with the program.
Make sure to list any edits you make in the file description when uploading, including the original filesize and format.

Image Formats

As a standard for the wiki, for most cases we will want to use PNG images instead of JPEG to avoid compression artifacts.
We also want to avoid formats such as WEBM since they heavily compress the image.
The only exception to PNGs are when officially sourced images are in JPG format originally; officially sourced images should always be in their original format.
For animated images, we currently only have support for GIF images, which should only be used for animated elements.

Screenshot Guidelines

As screenshots are generally user-made, we have strict guidelines on how you should take them.
Do not crop or change the image dimensions outside of the standard game resolution (720 x 1280) unless you're focusing on a portion of the image for clarity.
Avoid adding visual noise on top of the image. This includes user watermarks, colored overlays, and any text; these things can instead be added on top or around the image using the mediawiki's markup code.
Please avoid using frames of video footage if possible; the only case this acceptable is if the video is the only source available for the image.
When taking a screenshot of an in-game mesh or material, please do your best to hide user interface overlays when possible.
Screenshots taken with real hardware over emulation is preferred; you can take screenshots with an emulator if needed, but these are prone to graphical inaccuracies.
For more help with taking screenshots, see the Taking Screenshots help page for more information.
Below is an example of an overly messy screenshot that would be against the wiki rules:

Personal Images

Users are allowed personal images solely for use on User pages.
If your image contains content that is against the wiki's rules it will be removed.
There are a couple requirements for user images:
Please tag the image with your username in the filename. This is important for separating user images from regular images.
An example of a user image filename: DokkeFyxen_CoolDog.png
You will also need to add the {{UserImage|YourUsername}} template to the image summary, as well as a brief description of the image.
Try keep the image at a reasonable size!
Filesizes under 1 mb are required, a good size is around ~500 kb.
Image dimensions should also be kept at a minimum, with the maximum size being around 1000 x 1000 pixels.

Uploading Images

You can upload a file by selecting Upload from the left sidebar. When uploading a file, try to follow filename conventions, and tag your image appropriately.

CamelCase Convention

For all images, we want to use CamelCase convention for the filenames. This means having a capital letter for every word; if an image has an acronym, be sure to include all letters of the acronym in uppercase.
Some examples:
Object_Cheese_Wheel_Icon.png
Render_LED_Small.png

Banned Characters

There are certain characters that are not allowed in filenames as they can conflict with MediaWiki's page system, and generally make copying filenames quickly frustrating.

Filename Standards

When uploading an image, be sure that the filename matches the type of image it is.
For example, if you are uploading a render, make sure it has Render in the filename:

Render_Davinci_Angry.png

Some examples are provided below for other filenames:
Sticker_Avalon_Character.png
Badge_Clive_Main_Pipe_Dream.png
Concept_LittleBigPlanet_Beanstalk.png
Screenshot_Story_Wedding_04.jpg
PlayStation_Store_Avatar_Animals_Frog_Asia.png
UI_Tweak_Team_Filter.png
For popit icons, make sure to name the file with the type of icon, and also include Icon at the end of the filename. Some examples are provided below:
Material_Basic_Cardboard_Icon.png
Background_Africa_Savannah_Icon.png
Light_England_Garden_Star_Small_Icon.png
Costume_Africa_Zebra_Head_Icon.png
Decoration_Africa_Savannah_Leaf_Green_01_Icon.png
Object_England_Garden_Scenic_Wood_n_Wool_Tree_Small_Icon.png
Toy_Africa_Savannah_Character_Baby_Meerkats_Icon.png
(For reference, Toy is used to separate the premade developer objects made out of materials from regular objects.)

Filename Reference

For a list of image filenames to reference, see the Images category. Not all of the images currently uploaded follow proper naming conventions; if the filename for an image you uploaded gets changed by a Site Admin, make sure to use the naming convention they've provided.

Tagging Images

You are required to Tag your images appropriately before uploading them.
Below is a list of the current image tags, which will be updated appropriately when new tags are added.
Be sure to check the File Tagging Templates category for a list of all the image tagging templates.

Deleting Images

If you're looking to have an image removed, please edit the image page (edit in the upper right) and add {{delete}} to the image page.
This will mark the page for deletion, and a Site Admin will delete the image page in time. This also applies to regular pages.
